COLLEGE SONG AND POEM

College Song

To set the cause above renown.
To love the game beyond the prize.

To honour, while you strike him down;
The foe that comes with fearless eyes.

To count the life of battle good.
And dear the land that gave you Birth.

And dearer yet the brother-hood;
That binds the brave of all the earth.

To-day and here the fight's begun.
Of the great fellowship you're free.

Hence forth the school and you are one.
And what you are, the race shall be.

College Poem

Onward and upward
This is our song,
Onward and upward
Marching along.

Though day be weary,
Though night be long,
Onward and upward
Steady and strong.

Life lies before us,
Naught Shall we rue,
If we press onward
Faithful and true.

True to our founder,
True to our name,
Onward and upward
Ever the same.

Onward together,
Right to the end,
One of another
Each a true friend;

With hearts uplifted,
Steadfast are we,
Staunch and true Gallians Ever to be.

SHORT HISTORY

Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence had mooted the idea about establishing a chain of schools with a view to provide education to the children of the deceased and serving soldiers and officers of the British army. His dream took shape and four such schools, initially known as Lawrence Military Asylums were established in different parts of India. The first two during his lifetime at Sanawar (in present day Himachal Pradesh) in 1847, and Mount Abu (in present day Rajasthan) in 1856. The third at Lovedale, near Ootacamund (in present day Tamil Nadu) on 6 September 1858, and finally the fourth one in Ghora Gali in 1860. Lawrence was himself killed defending Lucknow during the Indian rebellion of 1857, also called India’s First War of Independence.

The Campus

Situated at the foothills of the Himalayas, at a height of about 1950 metres (6397 ft) above the sea level, the Lawrence College Ghora Gali spreads over an area of 150 acres (0.61 km2) of land. The founding Principal of the College was Rev H. W. Tabernacle. He served from 1860 to 1863. Admissions to the Pakistani children became open after independence in 1947.

Administration

The Principal is the Head of the institution. The Chairman of the Board of Governors is the Governor of the Punjab, whereas the Chairman of the Executive Committee is the GOC 12 Div, Murree. The first Pakistani Principal was Ch. Abdul Hamid from 1952 to 1955. The most well known and admired headmistress of Junior School was Miss Glegg. The most distinguished headmaster was Mr. Asghar Ali of the Prep School. The well remembered Principal of the recent decades is late Brig. Mohammad Rafiq, one of many Gallians who embraced the supreme sacrifice for their motherland, the first one was Major Raza Shah Shaheed(S.J). The first ever Gallian Principal who studied at the Lawrence College as a student, served as the faculty member and finally had the honour of becoming the Principal of the institution was Mr. Noor Muhammad Khan.
